4 – LOOPER: Time
travel hasn’t been invented yet in 2044, but it has in the future, and the mob
sends back targets for execution to eliminate any evidence of the crime. Joseph Gordon-Levitt works as one such
assassin, taking out random people from the future as soon as they are shipped
back to him. The catch is, 30 years
after he retires he will also be sent back for elimination, to “close the
loop”. Future Joe arrives in the form of
Bruce Willis, beginning a sequence of events that will determine the path the
world takes for decades to come. (continues after the jump) VV minor spoilers VV
This is a visually appealing movie, with futuristic devices
blending seamlessly with the economic and environmental degradation that has
occurred by 2044. However, much of the
film is set on a farm in the heartland, with Emily Blunt again proving her
chops. Stoic but kind and strong, she
has a vital role to play in the mystery of the film. There are some badass action sequences in
this, some amusing dialogue, and the scene in this post depicting how time has passed which
is hands down one of the best of the year.
The cast does well to give a sense of urgency to what’s going on, and
it’s a ruthless world they inhabit. The
soundtrack doesn’t disappoint, and if you can get past the inevitable
time-travel-doesn’t-quite-make-sense sensation, you will spend two hours fully
engaged and entertained.
