10 – THE AVENGERS: Wow. Marvel and Disney accomplished something
fantastic here, creating four movie franchises which managed to have their own
flavor but still had a sense that they could be occurring in the same
universe. Then they combined all of
these characters into one movie, didn’t even have some monstrous scary villain
(Loki is a noob), and still produced a first class comic book epic. While the plot wasn’t too original, the sheer
ambition and risk involved with making a film like this earn it some major
points. Oh, and it made $1.5 billion off a budget of $220 million. NBD. (continues after the jump)
The main trope is one of the great struggles of human experience: a group of individuals becoming, partly through their own will and partly through necessity, a functioning unit. Whether it’s playing a team sport or conducting a business project, almost everyone can identify with this on some level. The special effects are incredible throughout, and the last 30 minutes is a big gigantic battle sequence. Saw this one opening day in IMAX 3D, the whole shebang… and it was worth the price. Filled with classic cheesy one-liners and Tony Stark saying Tony Stark things, this is some serious fun with a solid message of strength through support.
